The Scary Truth About Gas Stoves

Add Comment

We have a gas stove drama constantly unfolding in our home. I am terrified of our gas stove and use it as little as possible, opting for the microwave, oven, blender, and simply serving raw food whenever I can. We had the opportunity to install an electric stove a few months ago when our gas tanks were empty—we even had the stove, as my parents had just received a new one from a friend and given us theirs; but we didn’t. Apparently my father and husband—who would’ve been responsible for overseeing and installing it, respectively—felt that it was too much work, not a great fit, and that since the house we live in was my grandparents’, it might also cause a conflict among family members.

An Old Fashioned Girl

Add Comment

August 1964 was brutal. I'd say I don't know why it sticks out in my memory, but that'd be a lie. My cousin Phillip, bird-brained kid that he was, went and got himself shot over in Vietnam. 17 years old and eager enough to leave home to lie about his age. I was in Richmond helping the cigarette people update their phone system. It was a mess, some glorified closet full of girls at switchboards barely able to see from all the smoke. My first recommendation was "ventilation". I never smoked myself (a topic I skirted during that entire gig) and I've always hated to see a pretty girl puffing away. Some folks think it's alluring, but me, I think it takes away some of the magic. I guess it's because you already know how she's gonna smell. That's why the girl at the hotel bar that last rainy Thursday night caught my eye. It was a room full of flaming tobacco but she hadn't lit up all night. After an hour of nursing this and that, I drank my last ounce of courage, picked up my suitcase and grabbed the seat next to her.

Help End Obstetric Fistula

Add Comment

I never knew what obstetric fistula was until The Breast Cancer Site started to run a campaign to help women with this terrifying condition. In fact, I’d never heard of the disease, period. Obstetric fistula, for anyone else who is unfamiliar with the condition, is the development of a fistula, or hole, between the rectum and vagina or the bladder and the vagina. It can happen after a woman undergoes a very hard childbirth. Poorly orchestrated abortions, female genital mutilation, and pelvic fractures may also cause the condition.

Can You Resist the Mystery DVD Deal?

Add Comment

I know I certainly can't! There could be any number of DVD's you could get when you order this for $3.99 (with free shipping). The odds might actually be in your favor and you could get a DVD box set or up to 4 individual DVD's. The people at 1 Sale A Day are generally pretty good at providing cool stuff - and I think the deal today is intriguing.  What will you get exactly? Well nobody knows - that is why it is a mystery! What I can see from the listing is you will get a chance to receive a collectible set, or up to four DVDS, from a randomly selected "pile" of DVD's that includes a wide variety of genres.

Manny Howard, "My Empire of Dirt"

Add Comment

I stopped reading after he bludgeoned the songbird to death.

But let me back up.

I first heard about Manny Howard when he was a guest on The Colbert Report.  Howard turned his Brooklyn home and yard into a farm, with the challenge to live off it for a month.

Comparing Nutritional Info with NuVal

Add Comment

When I first heard about NuVal, I figured it was some form of birth control. That’s what it sounds like, right? But it’s actually a new way of reading nutritional labels and comparing product information before you buy.

Nuval works by using something we’ve all grown accustomed to and use regularly on everything from Netflix to Amazon reviews—a rating system. It rates products with a score from 1 to 100, giving products that have a higher level of nutritional benefits higher score a and items with less nutrients a lower score. It sounds so simple that you wonder why it wasn’t done ages ago (aside from the obvious disapproval from companies that would definitely get lower scores for their goods, of course). According to the website, you can even “compare apples and oranges.” Heh.

Grandparents’ Day Activities

Add Comment

Every year, Grandparents’ Day sneaks up on my family and we always get our crafts out late. It’s on September 12 this year, so if we all start now we can surely get our acts together! Here are a few ideas to use this Grandparents’ Day.

Do a Play on Mother’s Day

If you’ve always brought Mom breakfast in bed for her holiday, why not do the same for Gram and Gramps? Make something homemade and delicious, like warm banana nut bread. If you simply can’t cook anything edible or if your grandparents enjoy eating out, take them to their favorite breakfast place—such as IHOP, Cracker Barrel, or Country Kitchen.
