Keeping Calm On The Go

Add Comment

There is almost nothing worse than being out and about running the mile high errands that have to get done and then have your cute little baby initiate a meltdown. As if having a list of errands to run and grocery shopping while toting the baby around with you isn’t stressful enough, now you’ve got all eyes on you putting the pressure on even more to get him/her to stop crying.

Calming the Colic

Add Comment

By now you know your baby well enough to decipher their different cries. There’s one for pain, a needed diaper change, hunger and another for tired. But sometimes, no matter what you do to try and please them, there is no consoling them. You’ve tried everything you know to do to make your little one happy but the tears and screams just keep coming. What are you to do and how do you keep yourself from losing it? An inconsolable baby can be very nerve wracking and the more worked up you are the harder it will be for baby to calm down.

Tickle Your Baby's Funny Bone

Babies are so much fun and the bigger they get the more interactive fun you can have together. When they are first born it’s all about eating, burping and pooping with a side of sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I love newborns and everything about them but there is nothing like that first real smile instigated by you playing peek-a-boo or blowing raspberries on the bottom of their cute, little feet. I find myself constantly finding different games and silly sounds to get my little one to give me an ear to ear grin and if I’m lucky, some of that contagious baby laughter.

Ear Infection or Teething?

Add Comment

One of the most common illnesses in young babies is ear infections. Signs to look for include a fever (not always present though), irritability, excessive fussiness and of course the ear pulling and head slapping. My daughter had frequent ear infections as a baby so this game isn’t new to me when it comes to my 7 month old son. So over the last couple days while watching him tug on his right ear and bopping himself silly I made him an appointment as soon as possible. He just seemed so miserable and wasn’t eating like he normally does. That’s a red flag right there that something isn't right. This boy LOVES to eat!

The Importance of Family Naps

For many people, a nap is an indulgence. We tend to devalue sleep as a culture in the Western world, often bragging about how little we get and trying to one-up each other over most nights without sleep at all. We carry around Visine for our tired red eyes, get crabby and addicted to coffee, and then wonder why the hell we feel so groggy by the end of the day.

It turns out that not sleeping can do real damage to your body, causing memory loss, weight gain, fatigue, and even symptoms of depression. So bragging about not sleeping is just as productive and genius as bragging about smoking, overeating, drinking too much, or injecting yourself with drugs, it seems. We should instead be focusing on how we can increase the amount of sleep in our lives to get the necessary seven to eight hours we all need.

Letting Go

My Baby GirlMy Baby GirlFrom the day our children are born we are overwhelmed with a love that we never knew we could ever feel. At the first sight of our sweet little baby we feel our hearts grow a hundred times bigger. Who knew that it was ever possible to love someone as much as we find we can at that moment in time? As we watch them grow, the days turn into months and months turn into years. Before we know it, we are taking them to their first day of school and fighting back the tears of both joy and sadness.

Getting What You Need

To sleep, or not to sleep; to eat or not to eat? That is the question that plagues many of us moms, including me. Being a stay at home mom, responsible for all in addition to trying to making an income one way or another from home, it’s hard to take care of yourself the way you should (and deserve) without feeling guilty about it. Baby is down for a nap (finally) and the others are at school. What should you do? Take a nap on the couch or tackle the breakfast dishes, start another load of laundry, vacuum, dust, etc.?

“Martyr” Does Not Equal “Great Mom”

I saw another one of those “Mother of the Year” stories on the front of our local paper—those small town hot topics!—and smiled… until I saw the sub-heading. It read something like, “She’s the best because she never does anything for herself!”

Hold up.

Early Ethics and Buggy Blues

The goal here is to teach my daughter to respect all living things. I have that clearly in my mind.

It seems to be going fairly well. She’s four and occasionally is rough with the cats or squeaks that we “have to kill” a bee that flies past her head, but she’s generally very gentle and kind. She likes to watch the spiders weave webs and the ants carry food…

The ants. That’s the first problem.
