June 19 is World Juggling Day, a perfect time to introduce kids to the art of juggling. Here are a few ways you can do just that.
Learn to Juggle: Another item on my own Living to Do List, juggling is something that my middle sister can do. My daughter and I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers once where he went to visit a circus. The juggling team told him that the best way to start juggling was with scarves, as they were very easy and help to build the juggling skills you need for harder items. So why not pull out a few of your scarves and juggle them together?
Once you get the hang of that, you can look up the many different juggling tutorials that are available online. This set of instructions gives very simple step-by-step ways to juggle. There are also many video tutorials for the visual learners out there. Plus, it’s just fun to watch the experts juggle! You never know what they’ll juggle next—or how high they’ll go.
Put on Your Own Circus: Once you get the hand of juggling, put on a circus show for friends and family. Let the kids engage in their own talents—such as riding a bike, dancing, doing the hula hoop, or any magic tricks they might already know. Then, as the final act, put on your juggling performance as a family. Make it a whole neighborhood affair with tickets, face paint, music, bubbles, and the works if you like. Teach kids about money and giving back by charging a small fee for tickets and donating it to the charity of their choice.
Attend a Circus Show: Find a circus near you and watch jugglers in action. Ooh and aah with your kids as the pros juggle all kinds of objects at all kinds of speeds and heights. You may want to avoid circuses that feature animals, since they are often cruelly mistreated during circus performances.
Learn About Juggling: You already know that people juggle balls, but what about flaming sticks? From swords to clubs to plates, people juggle nearly anything and everything. (As a parent, you already know that—you juggle with the best of them, just in another way!) See what kinds of funny things you can juggle together as a family. Maybe you can juggle your nerf balls, dolls, snow caps or teddy bears.
