New and experienced moms alike always find themselves looking for the best sites to provide them with the most up to date and accurate information as well as support. It’s not always the easiest task to tackle. Everything from what your child’s poopy diaper should or should not look like to breastfeeding in public, every mom out there can use some support. Facebook has turned out to be a wonderful outlet for finding support groups in every area imaginable. Over the next week, I will be posting and reviewing the best of the best and let you know which ones are worth your time and those that just simply don’t measure up.
To kick things off, I want to introduce you all to a support group for nursing mothers. It already has thousands of fans and is gaining more and more attention. The group is called “If Breastfeeding Offends You, Put a Blanket Over YOUR Head!” As a nursing mother myself, I had to check it out just based on their group name. Currently, I am on child number two and I know all too well about the negative reactions us nursing mothers can get when feeding our little ones on the go.
The entire group consists of mothers, just like us who are proud, nursing mommas who feel that the way we feed our babies is a natural way of life and others just need to get over it. The female breasts have been turned into nothing more than a sexual stimulant. Somewhere along the lines mankind has forgotten that breasts are there purely for sexual gratification, but intended for the growth, health and overall well being of our babies and mothers.
Here is a great example of how “confused” our society really has become. My family does their grocery shopping once a month. We do one big trip and call it good. Now, since my son is not even six months old yet, he of course comes along for the trip. I know that he is going to need to be fed on this trip and I am ok with that. When he does get hungry, I already know where the benches are in the store and find the closest one to get comfortable with him. To make sure that I don’t make others too uncomfortable, I do use a nursing shawl to cover up. People pass by and stare, some trying to sneak a peek but most just passing looks of disgust. Then in comes a woman wearing hardly anything and may as well not be wearing anything at all, and the only dirty look she gets is from us women who can’t believe that we are exposing our children to strippers at the grocery store!
I love this group and joined right away. It’s awesome to have support for something that is natural and healthy to be doing. Granted, I may not be comfortable to just whip out my left boob in public for everyone to see, but I feel that it’s up to us to make nursing in public a normality and in order to do that, we need to stick together and do it more often, even if we cover up.
