Host a Sing-a-Long Party
When my sisters and I were little, we got a kick out of those Disney sing-a-long videos. Are you familiar with the series? They’re basically compilations of Disney’s biggest hit songs from everything from Winnie the Pooh to Mickey Mouse to the classic films to Disneyland’s daily
songs and dances themselves! Like a karaoke video, each set features the words to the songs at the bottom of the screen with a bouncing ball to help crooners along with the lyrics. It’s so much fun to do, and it’s a great way to get some kids together for a themed play date.
First, you’ll need the sing-a-longs! The DVDs are easy enough to get a hold of, though if you have any musical CDs (not just Disney—Yo Gabba Gabba, Mommy & Me, The Wiggles, Barney, or whoever you’ve got will work!), that’s fine, too. You don’t really need the words or the animation, particularly if A. your kids already know the lyrics or B. they’re too little to read them.
For your invitations (if you’re not going by word of mouth or an evite), send out an easy pack of Disney party invitations. If you’re feeling crafty, make your own featuring music notes or similar items.
It’s really not necessary to decorate, but if you want to feel free to put up some pictures, balloons, or other traditional decorations featuring the characters in your videos.
Provide plenty of comfortable seating and standing room—as well as room for dancing! Beanbag chairs would work well, as would any big floor pillows you have laying around.
Make some yummy simple snacks—peanut butter and jelly with the crust removed and other “kiddie” finger sandwiches, bowls of fresh fruits, and some homemade punch all work well. We like to mix some Sprite with Hawaiian punch and top it off with Neapolitan sorbet, but you can always mix juice and seltzer or your favorite recipe for a healthier treat. Add raspberries to the ice cubes for a fun find!
Make some kiddie microphones, or buy some cheap ones at the store. (Target has them for under three bucks.) If you have a karaoke machine on hand, that will work, too, of course.
Finally, start the music and enjoy! Be sure to have a camera handy, as your kiddos are going to look adorable jamming to their favorite music. If you can, print out pictures to send home with guests as party favors.
