Better than word-of-mouth, library bulletin boards, or the school newsletter, GoCityKids.com is your source for all things kids in your area. I heard about it from Nickelodeon (of all places), and now I’m utterly hooked. The site has nearly everything you need to keep your family clothed, active, entertained, educated, and engaged.
If you’re looking for a camp for your child, GoCityKids has you covered. Want to find out which restaurants have free kids meals on certain days of the week? How about which companies near you specialize in kids’ parties and entertainment? You can search by all of these categories and more at GoCityKids.
My favorite features of the website are its weekly email and its searchable calendar. You can have an email featuring all of that week’s highlighted activities sent directly to your inbox. This helps you to find the coolest things happening without having to search dozens of websites to figure it out. And the calendar tool is just what so many families need while planning staycation time or simply figuring out what to do when it’s too hot, too cold, or rainy outside. (Of course, playing in the sprinkler, building a snowman, or splashing in mud puddles are all good options, respectively!)
Say you have an upcoming day off that you want to make super special for your family. Or maybe your oldest is having a birthday and you want to find out what the best activities happening that day are. Simply click on the date you have in mind and presto—all of that day’s events are right in front of your eyes.
Other great resources the site hosts include various shops and tourist stops that are considered family-friendly in your area, lodging options for families, outdoor activities, transportation available, and more. This makes the site helpful for people traveling, too; just plug in the city you’re traveling to and find out more about what’s happening there.
The only drawback to GCK is the lack of activities in smaller areas. Someday, it would be awesome if the site would add lots of smaller towns and their activities—though that would take a lot of work! Even dividing states by counties—still an exhaustive task—would be beneficial to so many families. Until then, we’re pretty much stuck with searching for our nearest major metropolitan areas. This isn’t such a big deal for my family and me, since we live just outside a big city; but for many rural families, it can be a bummer.
