Daylight Saving Time can be a difficult period of adjustment for many people—families especially. Here are some tips and tricks for making the adjustment—as well as some fun things you might want to do in honor of the day.
Give kids some time to process. Yes, it’s an hour later on Sunday morning than they are used to, so give them a little extra time to get ready in the morning if necessary. Don’t make big plans; instead, let them slowly adjust to the time change. Some families even let their children go to bed early throughout the week before the change to adjust.
Teach kids the “Spring Forward, Fall Back” saying. Explain the history and significance of Daylight Saving Time; if you need help, read this article.
Don’t spring forward too quickly, however. A study found that heart attacks rise after Daylight Saving Time! Though this could be due to a number of factors, don’t let the “lost hour” make you feel behind—or force you to speed up. Instead, maintain a calm composure and continue with your life as you normally do. This might even be a good time to pick up yoga or tai chi with your family; even little ones can learn the art of meditation, too. The same article has some tips about keeping healthy during Daylight Saving Time, too.
Literally “Spring Forward.” Talk about how the flowers start to spring forward as well; jump, leap, and make a game out of it. Explain that you’ve really only lost one hour, and that (even if you’re not too fond of losing an hour of sleep yourself!) it can be a good ritual leading into the fresh feeling of spring renewal. Use the day to do some spring activities, such as picking out garden seeds, working in the yard, doing some “spring cleaning,” or learning about animals that come out of hibernation in the spring time.
Make up a story about the hour that was lost. Did aliens take it? Was the world frozen in time, during which your child had to save the human race? This can stem plenty of creative ideas as well as drawings. Alternatively, make up a story about the hour we get back in the fall—is it rescued from the aliens? Did we take it from another planet? Did Father Time fall asleep and forget to move the clock forward?
