If you have children ages 5 to 12, you may find a solution to your summer blahs in an extraordinary new program. Camp Curiosity, a 6-week online “summer camp,” works for kids who are homeschooled, attend public school, or are even simply starting school in the fall.
Maria Murphy, a psychotherapist and a mother, started the camp to help parents learn to encourage active learning through various teaching strategies. She also kept fresh topics and how much fun children will have in mind during creation, as well as the President’s Fitness Program for children.
Estimates of loss of learning during the summer months are at about 30%, according to some experts. “Your kids will learn new concepts, get fun activities that reduce boredom and keep their minds working,” proclaims the website.
As the parent, you are the camp counselor, but the program is so flexible that you can choose how much time you devote to the camp—and with the price at $3 a week, you won’t be losing any money if you opt to only do select activities. All of the activities are also able to be saved for a later date, so if you experience a sickness, go on vacation, or otherwise are unable to complete a week this summer, you can always do it later—or even repeat weeks that you particularly enjoyed.
The best part is the different themes you get to choose from. I think no matter what your child is into, you’ll find something on the list that he’ll like. “Summer Safari” emphasizes learning about animals, habitats, and even the safari experience—including expeditions and collecting artifacts! If you’ve got a little astronaut on your hands, she might like “The Solar System,” which focuses on planets, space exploration and even NASA-based crafts.
The “My Business” theme might be just what your fledgling lemonade stand entrepreneur needs. It teaches about math, past inventors, saving money, and more. Young travelers will get a kick out of “7 Wonders of the World,” in which they’ll get the opportunity to both discover and create natural and manmade wonders, and in “Writing and Performing,” budding artists and actors will write, draw, act, and be more dramatic than ever. Possibly my favorite program, “Change the World” offers kids small ways to make a big difference in the world.
No matter which program you select, you’ll get over ten pages of content per week, plus recipes, crafts, physical fitness activities, links to other games and videos for your topic, and even weekly contests. There are also recommendations for books and movies, as well as local resources and parenting tools. All in all, if you couldn’t send your child to summer camp but still want to keep his mind active, this is one great way to do it.
