Great Graduation Gifts

Whether you’ve got a smiling kiddo in a cap and gown this spring, or the neighbor kid who mowed your lawn every summer is suddenly six foot two and going off to state university this fall, graduation is an exciting time for everyone. It’s the mark of new beginnings, and even in these uncertain economic times, a very hopeful time for a child becoming an adult. The possibilities in front of a graduate are endless… and so are the possible graduation gifts that he or she would love. Here is a quick guide to some great gifts for your favorite graduate this year.

Money. It’s timeless and everyone needs it! Every graduate could use it, whether for gas on the way to a job interview or laundry machines at college.

Gas or gift cards. The next best thing to money, these come in handy for the very same reason—and aren’t as likely to be wasted on late-night burritos.

Food. Buying food when you first start out on your own is a real eye-opener. It can be shocking how much fresh fruits and vegetables cost. A gift basket filled with fruits, veggies, spaghetti fixings and other no-skills-required items would be much appreciated. If you have the money, you may even want to consider a gift-of-the-month club for breakfast stuffs, fruits, or other foods.

Supplies. Grads may not be used to purchasing their own cleaning supplies, bathroom tissue, or laundry detergent. Picking out a few of these and tossing them in a laundry basket makes a great gift.

Appliances. You don’t even have to go new—if you are close and you have something gently used to donate, such as a mini fridge you never use or a spare toaster (from all of those wedding presents years ago…), go for it.

Electronics. Cameras, iPods and other doodads are always welcome. See what your grad needs. If nothing else, you can get him or her some free downloads.

Subscriptions. Nothing is lonelier for a new graduate than an empty mailbox! It doesn’t have to be expensive—a favorite magazine would be a great gift. But if you want to go all out, a subscription to Netflix or Blockbuster would likely put a smile on his or her fact, too.

Décor. Picture frames, art, and even pillows or throw blankets are all thoughtful gifts, especially if you are close and know his or her tastes. Be sure to tuck in a favorite photo!

House wares. Your new grad probably hasn’t even given an eggbeater, rubber scraper or paring knife a thought. Dishes, glasses, silverware, and any other kitchen wares would definitely come in handy.

Tools. Unless your grad is a fledgling carpenter, he or she may not be thinking much about screwdrivers or drills, either. Inexpensive basic tool kits are available for minor repairs and general use.

Time. If your grad has a fixer-upper he or she is moving into, needs help brushing up on algebra before fall classes begin, or could simply use some advice in balancing his or her checkbook, offer to lend a hand.

Gas cards are a great idea!

Gas cards are a great idea! With the price of gas as high as it is, new grads won't know what hit them when they are on their own.  Plus it limits them to buying a certain product instead of wasting their cash on frivolous things like I did.
