Tips For Traveling With Kids
Most people love to get away from home and see the world. However, spending a long period of time cooped up in car while you travel to your destination can be frustrating and tiring - especially if you have children. Here are five simple tips to make sure your trip is a safe and pleasant one.
Vacation Tip #1 – Check Your Vehicle
It’s important to check your car before hitting the road. Prevention is the best cure against car breakdown. Make sure your fluid levels are high enough and get the oil changed. Check the tires of the vehicle to make sure they have enough air in them and that they aren’t wearing down on the tread. You should also ensure that you are prepared for any emergencies. Pack a couple of blankets, a flashlight, cell phone charger, tools, map, water and snacks, and make sure your car insurance and breakdown cover documents are all handy. You certainly don’t want to be on the side of the road, hearing children complain.
Vacation Tip #2 – Bring Some Food and Drinks
Children can get cranky when they don’t get enough to eat. Bring along some snack food such as Trail Mix, chips, sandwiches, pop tarts, or granola bars. This is especially helpful for saving on time and money if you don’t want to stop at a fast food restaurant on the way. Make sure you have a plentiful supply of water or soft drinks to avoid dehydration.
Vacation Tip #3 –Make Pit Stops
When you are traveling with children, restroom stops are inevitable. Before you go, take a look at your route for possible places to stop that have some kind of historical significance or entertainment value. Give your children a little history lesson to keep them entertained, or find a spot with a place to let them stretch their legs and enjoy a family frisbee tournament or other activity. If you tire them out enough they may even sleep the rest of the way, letting you enjoy some well earned peace and quiet.
Vacation Tip #4 – Stay Flexible
The worst thing you can do is plan your trip on a tight, rigid schedule with no room for flexibility. Allow some free time in your trip to make an unscheduled pit stop if you find an interesting place or pass a great view. Being more flexible with your schedule will also reduce your stress if an unexpected delay arises.
Vacation Tip #5 – Something To Do
It’s important when you are traveling to have something to ward off boredom. If you have a portable DVD player, bring your child’s favorite movie or allow them to bring their handheld games. Audio books such as Harry Potter are great for long trips, as everyone can be entertained regardless of their reading level. Travel games like Connect Four and magnetic Checkers are also fun. Interactive games such as 'I Spy' or Bingo are a great way for the family to enjoy the trip together.
