A Great Book for Sexist, Superstitious and Outdated Homeschoolers!

Don’t get me wrong: I fully support homeschooling. I have successfully homeschooled a relative through her last few years of school, and I think it’s one of the best things you can do for your kids if you can fit it into your life and your goal is to produce healthy, happy well-rounded kids. I am currently researching into the best homeschooling methods, literature, curricula and other information for my own daughter—which is how I came across this book.

Homeschooling Methods: Seasoned Advice on Learning Styles is a poster book for the rule, “Never judge a book by its cover.” If you did (like me), you would think, “Wow, this looks like an info-packed book that’s going to be super helpful in making an informed decision!” It’s actually quite the opposite. Curriculum of Love

There is no doubt that we live in a scary world. With its violence, potential predators, and uncertainty, our children have every right to feel fear and worry. Who can blame them? Do we not lock our doors, install security systems and motion lights, and even take self-defense courses because we feel the same way ourselves?

But our children also have a right to feel hope. They deserve to feel safe, secure and loved—which is what we, as parents, can provide. Many people say that if you love your kids, that’s enough—and I believe that, to an extent. If you’re looking for a homeschooling book—or even a supplemental book to go with your child’s education—to help foster these feelings, Curriculum of Love is a great choice. Read more

Love and Logic

Last year, my daughter’s preschool held a Love and Logic session that I had planned on attending and missed out on. Later I heard about it again and decided to look it up, and am glad that I did.

Love and Logic is just that—raising your children lovingly and logically, without the squabbles, fights, harsh language and hateful words. It trains you to use logical, loving responses to your child’s misbehavior, turning every problem into a learning experience.

When kids cause problems, according to Love and Logic, they should be given the opportunity to have the problems tossed right back at them. This does not mean to bite your child when she bites you, but to let her solve the problems that she can on her own.

The two main rules of Love and Logic are super simple: Read more

Creating Lasting, Loving Family Traditions

When I was a kid, I always loved our family’s traditions. We always sang karaoke at the annual family reunion, drank milkshakes on long road trips to my aunt’s house (for which we’d leave at the crack of dawn, which was also fun), had homemade birthday cakes, and were treated to sundaes after going to the dentist.

As I got older, I realized that there were other traditions that other families had that ours didn’t—and I longed for them deeply. Singing around a piano at Christmas, first menstrual cycle celebrations, and family vacations (think Dan in Real Life rather than Disneyland) all had such a glittering appeal. Now that I’m a mother with a family of my own, I’m anxious to start our own traditions. Read more

Fun with Mommy & Me

When you work full-time (or even part-time), it can be very difficult to incorporate activities that are both fun and educational into your main job—parenting. Sure, you might do a puzzle together while the pasta boils, or doodle together while you’re waiting on the phone with customer service, but planning really creative adventures can sometimes fall by the wayside.

Enter Fun with Mommy & Me. OK, I will be the first to admit that the title is a turnoff. Even though Mommy & Me is a nationally recognized program, this activity book is also great for dads—so fathers of the world, don’t write this one off! Though published eight years ago, this book is choc full of simple but creative, fun and educational activities for busy parents and their kids. I stumbled on it at the library and had to get a copy; there are many used, super cheap ones available. Read more
