Kid Inventors Day

Be the First to Comment!

What a fun day to spend with your students, children, or anyone who’s into making new things! If you think inventing is boring, think again—from slime to bouncy balls to paper airplanes to rockets, you can go far beyond the traditional (but still fun, in my opinion!) erupting volcano.

Spend January 17 inventing something new. You could probably think of a thousand things on your own; how about some of these to get you started?

Get a kit to make anything from bouncy balls to car race kits to grown crystals. These kits are amazing and always make my birthday list. (No, not my kid’s, my own!) Read more

New Year’s Activities for You and Your Family

Though New Year’s Day is past, we still have almost a month until Chinese New Year; and, like many life coaches claim, the entire month of January can be dedicated to starting anew rather than simply the first day. That’s why we still have weeks of New Year’s goodness left to do all kinds of cool things with our kiddos.

Goal Book: A book of aspirations, dreams, goals, whatever—I call mine a Magnum Opus (like Charlotte calls her web in Charlotte’s Web)—it’s both fun to make as well as keep. Sit down with your kids and make a list of ten things you each wish to accomplish this year. They can be silly—make a crown out of aluminum cans, freeze bubbles in midair—or serious—improve your algebra knowledge, get fit as a family. If you’re feeling super motivated, list twenty or more goals. Read more

One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to grow "Crystal Gardens." The first time crystal gardencrystal gardenI did it was in a Sunday School class; the teacher found the instructions in a little booklet tied to a jar of laundry blueing. This is a super activity for a rainy summer day with your kids. You can build a single garden together, or, if you've got multiples or the neighbor kids, they can each make small individual gardens. If you are running out of summer activities to do already—or if you just want something fun to do inside today while it’s so hot outside—creating a secret handshake with your child is a great activity. Not only is it fun and silly, it’s also a great bonding moment between the two of you—not just when you create the handshake but also every time you use it afterwards. Imagine seeing little Jimmy off to college and using your secret handshake before he drives away into the sunset!

Creating a secret handshake is really simple, and you can do whatever you want; just be creative. Here are some tips and ideas if you are stumped (or haven’t had any caffeine yet today): Read more

Sneaking in Family Fitness

DDRDDRYou may have mastered the art of sneaking in some good nutrition into your kids’ lives (yogurt “smoothies” and veggie “bugs,” anyone?), but getting them to exercise can take cunning, craftiness—real skills on the front of the parenting battlefield. But fret not, oh working soldier mom-or-pop; this guide will help you sneak in some physical activity in your kids’ lives—as well as your own—keeping you healthy while you have fun together.

Go outside and play. This is the best way to get some movement in your day because you also get fresh air. While it’s not so sneaky, just being willing to take a break from work and play with your kids—whether it’s Frisbee, catch, or simply tag—will send the message that playtime is important. Show them what you played as a kid. Chances are, they’ve probably never even heard of stickball. Read more
